Research Paper

Filed Under (Uncategorized) by proppspropaganda on 09-03-2007

Ahh yes, it is research paper time in my class.  Students look at me every day like I have three heads.  I imagine they are thinking, “how can this be so difficult?!”  It is tedious and much attention needs to be paid to details like punctuation and alphabetizing and what needs to be quoted and what needs to be underlined and citing authors and sources.  This list goes on.  However, this process is so very important to those of you who will go on to college.  This type of paper will be given out frequently and expected to be done correctly with very little instruction from the professor.  So, all of your blood, sweat and tears WILL be worth it!  Believe me!  You will thank me some day!  What are your questions as you begin this process?  How can I help? Write to me and let me know.

Just want to say how much I support your efforts with the research paper. My daughter graduated from Gowanda and continues to say how very well prepared she feels in college. Specifically in her English classes, she will tell anyone that she’s read more of the books that her college professors ask about and was taught to write her papers in the way that her college professors require.

For your students–believe her, it’s a worthwhile activity that you should do well.

Learning the correct way to write and punctuate a Research paper is a very valuable skill. I was very fortunate to have a teacher that took the time to teach this. Being in college and having to write numerous research papers is at times challenging and I see other students that never learned the process struggle greatly with it. Embrace the chance that you are given in high school to learn how to write a paper properly because in college most Professors don’t take the time to instruct you on how to efficiently and correctly construct a paper, they expect you to know it already so they won’t waste their time or yours. I definitely can vouch that the blood, sweat, and tears are worth it!

Totally hated doing this last year, and it’s getting difficult to start on this once again. I know it’s important. Yet here i sit still lost on what i should do. After watching that video of that animal SKINNED ALIVE!!! i can’t proceed with the Animal Rights subject. I’ll look for something more. Maybe Ordinal Positioning…….

Listen to Obiewon Propp. Wise she is. The process of writing a research paper can be tedious, but the end result is gratifying. May the force be with you. Blog on.

To the 11th grade english class,

I graduated from Gowanda in 2005 and I’m now in my second year of college. In my english classes, I’ve been required to write numerous research papers. Having Mrs. Propp teach me how to write a research paper step by step was a huge help for me when I got to college. The professors do not take time to teach the class how to write the papers, they expect you to know it already. Fortunatley, i was prepared when I was assigned a 15 page research paper my second week of class. The other students in my class were struggling because they were never taught how to properly write a research paper when they were in high shool. To make a long story short I got the highest grade in my class (A-) while the other students were just barely passing. I’m not saying that learning to write a research paper in 11th grade is going to get you an A on every paper; or that it will make it less stressful, because no research paper is ever stress free, but it will make your life a lot easier when you know how to write the paper before getting a professor that just gives you an assignment, gives you the date that it’s due and that’s it. Trust me, Mrs. Propp knows what she’s doing. She’s a great teacher. LISTEN TO HER!!! Good Luck!

Throughout my four years in high school, I always dreaded writing timed essays that were supposed to discuss, in depth, a piece of literature, or an “important” topic. I just didn’t see the relavancy of it all. Why would I ever need to learn to disect a passage, or gather information from material? When would I ever need to source information?
My first semester in college, I had to take a class that required a submission of 4 typed pages, assigned on a Thursday, and due the following Monday. Between other homework, working, [and of course going out], time is stretched too thin in college, and it never goes far enough. I learned quickly that those “useless” skills from high school became essential tools in college. Professors don’t teach you how to research or cite works, but they do expect you to do it correctly when you turn your papers in, and you are penalized for anything less than exceptional.
Those “pointless” timed writings came in handy many times. I’m not going to lie, I, like almost all other college students have stayed up all night doing a last minute research paper. It is of great use knowing what information to look for, how to cite it, and most importantly how to put it all together in a coherent essay as fast as you can.
It all goes back to learning these essential skills in high school. You’re not paying for the education, so take the information while you can. Soon you WILL be paying for it, with loans and scholarships and all that information you blew off [because you didn't "need to know it"] can cost you thousands of dollars and a wasted education.

Alright…the research paper is really hard but it is worth it. I come from an environmental science school and they require correct documentation for every paper I write them (even if it is a paragraph). If I do not give correct documentation then they will take off a whole letter grade even if the writing is the best they have even seen. I have been bit a few times by this. I know a lot of people hate this project but if you don’t get anything else out of it…at least learn that there are different ways how to write and cite a paper. It will really help you in college. I bet that when you are writing your first research paper you will be thanking Mrs. Propp, because I sure did!

For example, the first paper I had to do for English was a reasearch paper and everyone on my floor did not know how to do it…except me. I was done with the paper in a day while others were struggling with it for a week and some even handed it in late. I was happy that I had Mrs. Propp’s research paper behind me!!!!!

Back in the old days when milk was two cents a pint…I used to aspire that I could become anything I wanted. That is why, when I was just a little girl I had always knew I could become an English teacher. Sadly for me I have many health problems and it was impossible for me to extend any further towards my dreams, since I was concealed to a bed for my teen years and to the mid twenties of my life.

I had become bitter towards the world and my life seemed to be spinning away before me very eyes…Then came Mrs. Fundle. Her teachings have taught me not only the vast techniques of karate in Japan…but have also taught me various ways of expessing my inner-self upon paper.

That is why I feel that this English paper you are having your wonderful Gowanda children take part in is a glorious idea which will bring you much joy in life.

Take care…and remember to keep your eyes towards your dreams. Sadly they did not come true for me since I have lost many of my privileges and am not allowed to teach. But you keep to your dreams and make each day it’s best.

*Hope and Hugs* from Mary Poppins!

This is such a difficult assignment it has taken up all of my spare time. Yesterday I was sitting in front of the computer starring at what I had typed and remember thinking how hard the anthology was. Now the anthology looks like cake. Its not that it was hard to gather the information, but rather keep track of it. And the writing! Oh boy the writing…. it’s hard for me to put my comments in after a quote because I would only be repeating myself. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to keep at it. Haha, love ya Mrs. Propp ^_^ (that “^_^” is a smiley. see? ^_^)

Alright folks,
Here is the deal. Research papers are not fun. I’m going to tell you that right now, but you know what? You had better learn to deal with it and learn how to do one correctly, because that is all you are going to do in college. I am so thankful that I learned how to use MLA citation. If you don’t know how to do this for those of you who are going to college, you had better brace yourself for a failing grade on your papers. Other than learning to cite works, I felt that I was poorly prepared for college writing. My first paper was the same length of my longest in high school, and they haven’t gotten shorter. Yes, every student is going to hate the new more challenging English classes in Gowanda, and writing research papers, and creating a thesis…but once you get to college you will thank the English department. So cut them some slack. They are just trying to make sure you don’t fall on your face in the future.
